USB Drive

By: James Walsh

To understand the importance of the USB drive in the current scenario, one must understand how important backup is in the world of information technology. A world that has infiltrated nearly every aspect of our lives has made data an all important player. However, the IT world is made up of extreme high strung temperamental features that can let us down when we least expect it. Data loss can leave us stranded and result in a loss of great amounts of money. Given the unpredictable nature of computers and everything attached one must always be prepared.

Backup of data is mandatory if you don’t want to suffer data loss. Understand that data loss can happen to the best and most professional of us. It is indeed a great equaliser. Backup media is the readily available option to help us have an alternative storage space. However, all media are not designed to be permanent backup solutions and are susceptible to external forces and damage. There are affordable and compact media without too much storage capacity or there is great storage capacity but of a temperamental nature. The USB drive has been introduced as fairly hardy, affordable and suitable for most storage needs.

Features

A flash drive consists of a small printed circuit board in a plastic or metal casing which makes the drive sturdy enough to be carried around easily. The USB connecter protrudes from the protection and can be covered by a cap. Typically, flash drives use a standard type-A USB connection which allows direct access to a built in port of a computer. While most USB drives can sustain on the power supplied by the connection, some high speed ones may require a self powered hub.

The essential features of a USB drive include being compact, fast, reliable and with a great storage capacity. Additionally files can be altered and changed as frequently as one requires without it affecting overall performance.
The overall features of the USB drive make it extremely attractive to computer users as an ideal storage medium. Considering the value that they offer, USB drives are a fairly affordable option and easily available.

USB Vs Optical Discs

We have seen the features and reliability of the USB drive as a hardy backup option. One must compare it to the hitherto popular optical disc to be able to truly gauge its credibility.

CDs and DVDs have served well over the years as the initial backup options that were available. However, they came with their drawbacks – primarily, their susceptibility to damage and with the increase in data there was need for greater storage space. Manufacturers tried to improve on the initial designs and we soon had the CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW series all of which tried to offer a better and more efficient backup medium.

While CDs are compatible with DVD drives, the DVDs of the different versions needed different drives. For the average consumer to keep up with the differences and invest in different hardware was quite painful. Added to this, the non-permanent nature of CDs and DVDs as storage solutions meant having multiple backup media.

While CDs and DVDs continue to be popular with beginners because they are easily available and very affordable, the more discerning and regular computer user remains slightly dissatisfied with optical disc options mostly because of their unreliable and less than hardy nature.

Conclusion

The average computer user has data stored on his computer which is of relative importance. The loss of this data can be quite stressful and also means monetary loss. In the case of large Corporations of course, the volumes of mission-critical files are enormous. While the USB drive may not be able to fit in all of a large Corporation’s needs, it definitely is designed to suit most of the needs of the individual computer user. It is almost incredible that this small 2-3 inch pocket-sized wonder can contain such a large volume of data. It is not easily breakable and not susceptible to scratches because of its design. This means that it can be slipped into a pocket and carried to any destination and because it is compatible to ports in most computers can be accessed anywhere. The USB drive definitely gets a thumbs-up from the average user and the only complaint if any, is that it can be misplaced because of its small size.
