Why You Should Not Engage a Data Recovery Company

Data recovery firms, the traditional ‘fire fighters’ of the domain of digital data loss, are no more the best choices in this regard. The easiest, cheapest, and fastest way to get back data, at least where the home user is concerned, is the DIY software.

Different Data Recovery Needs

Data recovery dates back to the time when computers first came to be used. The machines were huge, cumbersome, and expensive. Therefore, a company that could afford such a monster could also afford to shell out millions on data recovery. Then came the humble desktop, and the equation changed entirely. Roughly around the early 1990’s, data recovery prices started falling, and then came the DIY software. This was exclusively keeping in mind the fact that our data recovery needs are not universally the same. A business would have a huge volume of data that needs recovery, and if it has been lost through malicious attacks, there would be legal implications as well. Only a professional recovery firm with software, hardware and legal back up would be able to handle the case. But if a student accidentally deletes his thesis, he might just download a software and get back the file within an hour at a fraction of the cost. Data recovery firms are important, but for only those who need the service.

Problems of Approaching a Recovery Company

There are a lot of strings attached to utilising the services of professional data recovery groups. Some of the points are being noted below.

• The first problem is getting the affected device to the office. Would you have to take out your hard disk from the computer and courier it? If so, is the courier suggested by the firm safe enough? If not, where would you find a reliable courier? If the company is providing its own transport, they would charge for it, and you would have to sit at home at least for a day for them to arrive. When the data has been recovered, you would have to wait for the courier again, or turn up personally to collect it.


• The whole point of data recovery is that you want it all back again – and fast – which will never happen with a company. You may have to wait for more than a week (or even a couple of weeks) to get back what you need in your everyday life. If you are running an SME or a desktop business, then it is even worse. You would have to cope with the down time charges while the staff sit idle, clients get irritated, and business opportunities are lost. A DIY software does the recovery immediately, and with least publicity where customer relations are concerned.


• Let us state the obvious again, all said and done, the fees charged by data recovery professionals are much higher than the money required to buy any DIY software. After spending all that money, there is no guarantee that you will get back all the data that you want. If it is a 85% recovery, then the lost 15% might have consisted of all those files that you wanted most! So your money is lost, you cannot do anything about it, and you are far from satisfied.


• How would you know which recovery company is best suited for your purpose? Frankly, there is no way to gauge that. The company that seems to be offering the best bargain might turn out to be one of those outsourcing organisations that do not have anything beyond a bare minimum staff run from a ‘shell’ office. Your disk or USB drive or DVD will end up at a third party company, whose agent is the ‘recovery firm’ you have just paid. This might turn out to be a good service, but it may be incredibly slow, with various hassles thrown in at every step. And if the company decides to discontinue the services of the agency while your data lies at their mercy – you would be in a proper soup.


• Finally, there is the threat of data leakage. This is being feared especially by corporate clients now, as recovery firms misuse or sell important content to rivals. You never know what they would do with their copy of your data.
